Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
